This might necessitate you needing to go back to your original drive and using whatever update procedures have been developed at that time.
This will mean you will lose the recordings on your 4TB drive. If you understand this and are happy to accept this risk then proceed. Otherwise you are advised to stick to drives of 2TB or less for now or use the Windows method above. This step can be skipped if you purchased one of the OEM drives I link to above. Insert your Ubuntu Rescue CD or usb pen drive and let the system boot.

You should then be good to go. Warning: The Roamio upgrade method is remarkably simple and has been a long time coming, however there are a couple of things you need to be aware of. Firstly this will result in you losing all of your current recordings and season passes so I suggest copying those off first with Tivo to Go [if your evil cable company lets you].
Secondly if you use cable cards with your Tivo you may need to re-pair these depending on how aggressive your cable operator is with authentication [ rarely required ]. Typically this is a simple procedure of calling your cable company - although note with some, like Time Warner Cable, talking with their customer service reps about cable cards can be a bit like pulling teeth so you may need to escalate the call to get to talk to the correct person.

Some old PCs ship with these turned off. For this process the only hard drives you will need connected to your PC are the original TiVo hard disk and the disk you plan to upgrade to.

Note, depending on the number of shows recorded on your original TiVo drive you may see lots of partitions listed here such as sda1, sda2 etc.
You can safely ignore these since the commands below operate on the complete physical disk in this case the letters before the number, so sda, sdb etc. At the prompt this type the command:. This step can take upwards of an hour on a dual core 2. If you copy from the blank drive to the original drive you will wreck your TiVo.
If you don't want to wait several hours and don't mind loosing all your current recordings then you can use the following command which will take only a few minutes:. In my experience this command has no negatives and does not appear to impact TiVo's performance in any way.
Issue the command:. The options here have the following effect:. In either case you can safely ignore any warnings here. If you do get an error invalid command you can try the following to just set the acoustic management which may also fail on the latest drives and is nothing to be concerned about :.
For the majority of people this step is unneeded and can be safely skipped. Press and hold the power button of your PC so that it powers off.
Then disconnect the old TiVo hard disk and put it somewhere safe in case you ever need to put it back in for a warranty call. Then take the new TiVo hard disk and mount it in your TiVo. Screw the cover back on, plug it all in and power it up.
Default capacity from the procedure above will be about HD hours or so. It won't actually effect the copy but if you drag something in front of the MFScopy window it will cease to update and you won't know how far it has got until it finishes and updates the window once more.

This CD has a simple wizard that installs the image on your hard drive. Unlike Windows, you must mount the hard drive partitions before you can access them. If you followed the Hinsdale How-To, you should be familiar with this, but I will review it. First you need to create new directories which you will use to access the various drives and their partitions. In the example above, we are creating a mnt directory to mount our hard drive partitions.
Then, we create directories for the 4th, 7th, and 9th var partitions on the TiVo drive. Now we need to mount the drives. Don't be too alarmed if you see some messages or warnings. Use the cd and ls -l commands to make sure your drives are configured correctly.
If you TiVo has never upgraded itself or you are using a clean image, there may not be anything on hda7. It can be tricky to find and mount the correct serial drive. If you mount the wrong drive, use the umount command to unmount and try again. Modified files are replaced with the originals. Obviously, you want your hacks to be there whenever the power goes out. Fortunately, there is a program to kill this hdinitrd process called killhdinitrd. Copy the vmlinux. An example follows. It may or may not be the right commands depending on your file names and locations.
Follow the on-screen prompts to patch the kernel file. Once that is done, apply the kernels to the two root partitions An upgrade will wipe out your hacks, and it is best to upgrade only when you are prepared to do so.

These instructions are also available in the killhdinitrd support thread. Note the bootpage commands may not work with some Linux boot CD's. You will have to issue the commands from a telnet session when we get to that point. TivoTools The TiVo software has very few commands built-in. This where the tivotools file that we downloaded earlier comes in.
The first 2 commands create a tivo-bin directory on both boot partitions. If you were not able to mount partition 7 earlier, don't sweat it. The third and fourth commands will extract the files into the newly created tivo-bin directories. I suppose it is for security reasons or maybe they just don't like us hackers. Of course, we are going to change that. That should take care of the networking filters on both root partitions.
If you receive any errors, don't worry. It just means there is an older software version on that partition that doesn't have the filters in place. If you want to enable DHCP, do not enter the dhclient commands renames the dhclient. Your router will automatically assign your TiVo an IP address. You'll have to go into your router, though, to see what IP address it assigned your TiVo box in order to access it. Essentially, we are renaming the iptables file and copying a new, hacked one over.
Then we make it executable. Don't sweat it if the hda7 commands do not succeed. If you want to use a dynamically assigned IP address, you'll need to find a dhclient file somewhere and copy it to the sbin folder.
